Tour will include stops at:
- Largest solid waste incinerator in the Northeast
- Diamond alkali Superfund site — Largest dioxin contaminated site in the world
- Tidewater Baling Brownfield site abandoned next to Soccer Field and Recreation Center
- Containers from Port Newark stacked five stories high or more next to public housing
- Chemical Corridor — down Doremus Avenue where over 20 Toxic Release Inventory Facilities are located.
- End at Passaic River Waterfront — with our plans to redevelop the riverfront as parkland (Newark skyline in the background)
Main issues/sites:
- Reducing disproportionate air toxics emissions from major point sources including an incinerator and several chemical plants, and also from mobile source emissions from trucks and autos.
- Clean up of the Superfund contamination from the largest dioxin contaminated site in the world — resulting from the production of Agent Orange at a facility on the Passaic River. Today, the dioxin contamination emanating from this site has poisoned more than 13 miles of river and entered into biotic life throughout the entire ecosystem.
- Cleaning up brownfields — former industrial properties are being developed for residential use without proper clean up or left abandoned and open in the community. Lack of greenspace and recreation spaces — Ironbound has less than a half acre of parkland per 1000 residents, a deficit that is larger than any other comparable city. Children in this densely populated neighborhood are often forced to play on brownfield sites or streets.
The Ironbound tour will begin at the Ironbound Boys and Girls Club, 11 Providence Street, Newark, New Jersey (main entrance off of Raymond Blvd).
