Take Action to Get Toxic Chemicals Out of Dollar Store Products

The largest dollar store chains - Dollar General and Dollar Tree/Family Dollar - make billions in profits every year, but continue to sell products that contain known toxic chemicals. And they are falling farther and farther behind their competitors like Walmart on product safety.

In 2024, all of the nation’s largest dollar stores failed to meaningfully strengthen their chemical policies and intervene in their supply chains to keep their shoppers safe from substances linked to learning disabilities, cancer and reproductive harm. Dollar Tree knowingly kept lead-contaminated apple sauce on its shelves, putting children in harm's way. Dollar General failed to expand its list of restricted substances, which does not include PFAS, most phthalates, and many other chemicals known to cause harm. Dollar stores can and must do better.

What: This holiday season, we are asking members of our networks to visit their local dollar stores across the country to send a clear message up the chain: families deserve to know that dollar store products are safe. We’re calling on dollar stores to make a New Year’s resolution to strengthen their chemical policy in 2025 and disclose their full chemical footprint.

Who: The Campaign for Healthier Solutions, a project of Coming Clean and the Environmental Justice Health Alliance for Chemical Policy Reform, is working to get toxic products out of dollar stores. Community organizations lead the campaign, joined by many allies.

We hope you’ll join us in taking action during the week of December 2-8, 2024.

Use this form to pledge to participate and receive background materials.

Where: You can join the dollar store week of action from anywhere! CHS will be supplying an action toolkit with a sample letter you can deliver to the manager of your local dollar store (Dollar Tree/Family Dollar, and Dollar General.).

Why: We know from previous actions that showing up to dollar stores and engaging management is an effective way to send messages up the chain to corporate leadership.

Ways to take action December 2-8:

  • Visit your local dollar store and deliver a letter to the store manager. Ask the store manager to send the letter to headquarters. We will provide educational materials and a letter you can deliver.
  • Email the CEO/post on social media.
